    Hot Air Blowing – This is most commonly due to a refrigerant leak. A quick check you do at home is to start the car, turn on the a/c and see if the compressor comes on. If it does not, we know you have an electrical problem or a refrigerant leak. If it does, then it is likely you have a control or circulation issue. Another cause could be a control problem that is causing the heat to turn on.

    No Air Blowing – A blown fuse is often the cause of this problem. Another possible, but rare reason, is a faulty dashboard fan or blower switch. If replacing the fuse does not repair the problem, you will need a certified electrician to diagnose the root cause of the problem.

    Odd Noises – A drive belt makes the air conditioning compressor turn, and that keeps the cooling refrigerant circulating. If the belt is worn, stretched or cracked it can slip or break which can make noise or stop the compressor altogether. When this happens, circulation stops and the air conditioner quits cooling. It can also cause other serious damage to other engine systems.

    Strange Smell – This problem is characterized by a musty or mildew odor when the fan is turned on. This condition can indicate that mold or mildew is growing in the evaporator box requiring a cleaning procedure to eliminate this smell.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

For an AC system to work, it needs a gas or liquid substance called refrigerant (R-12 in older cars, R-134a in 1995 and newer cars). Over time, refrigerant can leak from the AC system through seals. If the AC does not have enough refrigerant, it will not blow cold air.

KEEP IN MIND:

Since the AC system is a sealed unit, the only way to tell if the car needs a recharge is if the AC is not blowing cold air through the vents. There are two types of refrigerant. These cannot be interchanged. For older cars, it should be filled with R12 refrigerant or converted to a newer system. For cars made after 1995, the AC should be filled with R134a.

HOW IT’S DONE:

• Install air conditioning manifold gauge set.
• Determine if the air conditioning system charge is low.
• Add the correct refrigerant to top off the air conditioning system.
• Install thermometer in vents to monitor vent temperatures.
• Check system for leaks.
• Check for proper operation of AC system.
